Recuérdame 2023 - Last Year's Activity

What a joy is is to be with you all tonight in celebration of our ancestors. I wish to share just a few words about the history of this holiday and how it relates our activities this evening.
The Day of the Dead has ancient roots in Mesoamerica. In the United States, the equivalent is Memorial Day celebrated at the end of May. Latinos celebrate it much better!
Tradition claims that on these days (Oct 31-Nov 2), the border between the spirit world and the real world dissolve. During this brief period, the souls of the dead awaken and have the option to return to the living world to feast, drink, dance and play music with their loved ones.
In order to allow them to come back, the living family members treat the deceased as honored guests in their celebrations, and leave the deceased’s photo, favorite foods and other offerings at gravesites or on the ofrendas built in their homes. Ofrendas are typically decorated with candles, bright marigolds alongside food like stacks of tortillas and fruit.
As the movie Coco illustrates, our ancestors are only permitted to come as they are remembered with a photo on an ofrenda. If our posterity fail to remember us, place our photo and speak our name, our annual visits, connection and joy comes to an end.
“There are three deaths: the first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.”
– David Eagleman
FamilySearch is a free website and app that allows us to build permanent family ofrendas to memorialize our loved ones always. Our hope is that we can remember all of our ancestors by building a permanent family tree “ofrenda” for the entire world. So that everyone that has ever lived can be remembered and have their name spoken again and again.
FamilySearch has locations throughout the world. Our Burley center is located on 14th Street and is open every day except Saturday. There we can help you upload fotos, record memories and search for ancestors long forgotten. Here tonight we have some stations to help get you started with a free account and start creating your own ofrenda.
