Family History Has Changed!  

Family history isn't just the names, dates, and places all written out on stacks and stacks of papers.  It's about changing hearts.  "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers..." Malachi 4:6
   
Think about the following activities and see if they apply to family history or turning of the hearts. 

• Do you enjoy looking at old photos and seeing how things have changed?  Check out our Community Projects Tab for options of viewing some old photos from our communities. 

• Do you enjoy taking photos and preserving current family events for future generations? 

• Can you take a photo with your phone?  If so, you can preserve photos to FamilySearch with that same click.  Note: FamilySearch is not to be a storage place for all your photos of living people, but rather a place to share photos of deceased ancestors.  Uploading photos to FamilySearch

• Do you enjoy reading or listening to stories about your grandparents?  Did you know there is a website called "All the Stories" that will populate a listing of all the stories on your family tree in FamilySearch? 

• Or, do you enjoy sharing your own stories with your children or grandkids?  Are those stories recorded for future generations?  Consider recording them with Memories app or something like using Marco Polo.  (Note: this video was done two years ago and some of the screen shots are different, but the basics are covered.)

• Ever have that fun evening gathered around the tv or computer and enjoy viewing old family movies?  Or, are those movies just sitting in the attic or the basement on the old reels or tapes that you can't even view because you don't have the proper equipment to view them?  We can help you with that at the center - we can digitize about any media you might have.  Check out all of our options.

• Maybe you like to scrapbook current family events or make tribute pages to your ancestors?  You can digitized those old scrapbooks and upload them to FamilySearch so more people can enjoy the pages and learn about their ancestors.  

• Does your family have a Facebook page honoring a family line or an important individual in your family?  How about sharing those memories on FamilySearch?  Or, honoring one grandparent a month with all of the cousins sharing their favorite memories online?  Three ways to honor our ancestors

• Do you, following Thanksgiving dinner, have the older generation share with the family the happenings of their lives?  Or, share the greatest things they have learned while on this earth?  Have you thought about recording those - using the Memories app with only a few clicks, they can automatically be put on FamilySearch. 

• As temples are constructed, they often contain a time capsule.  Have you created a family time capsule to be opened in 20 or 50 years?

• What adorns the walls of your home?  Photos of ancestors, visual family tree charts, quotes about family, photos of family or of the temple?

• Ever made a recipe from an ancestor's homeland?  Those are easily available on FamilySearch in the activities tab.  Or, by visiting the Family History Center and playing on the big Discovery screens.  You can email them directly to yourself from there.  

• Do you have Christmas traditions?  Reading the Christmas story from the Bible?  Maybe your family had traditions they started years ago.  Maybe it includes acting out the nativity by the younger children.  What were the Christmas traditions of your ancestors?  Christmas Traditions Around the World

• How about those Christmas newsletters in sharing special events with other family and friends?   (Even if it takes on a more technical form of blogging or electronic family newsletter.)

• What other traditions might your family have in relation to holidays or observances?  Back to school blessings?  Thankful statements before Thanksgiving dinner?  Daily scripture reading or family prayer?  Family temple attendance?  20 Family Traditions Ideas

• What would it mean to you to hear the voice of your loved one?  Do you have audio cassettes hidden somewhere among those boxes you got from grandma?  We can help digitize those at the center as well.  They can then be shared on FamilySearch.   

• And don't forget - have you recorded your own life story?  How about your testimony?  Those things can be recorded on your FamilySearch account and will not be made public until your death.  And, we have a state of the art recording studio at the Center where you can record those stories 4 minutes at a time, complete with video options.  Record My Story Activity

This is not an all inclusive listing of family history activities, but just a sample of things you can be doing.  And, probably things you are already doing and didn't realize they were really family history related.  Maybe now you might do some of these activities with a little more purpose.   

In case you didn't notice, there's a lot of things we can assist you with at the FamilySearch Center.  And, FamilySearch is a great place to share these treasures so multiple family members and many generations can enjoy them.  Come see how we can assist in your family history endeavors!

March Consultant Training

Using FamilySearch Family Tree App

The FamilySearch Family Tree App will allow you to do the following:

• View your family tree in the portrait or fan view
• Add or edit information and relationships.
• Search and attach records as sources.
• Generate tasks lists.
• Search for duplicates, and merge them.
• Add and view memory items
• View your relationship to an individual

The following features are unique to the mobile Family Tree app:

• Relatives Around Me (Relatives at RootsTech is available until March 31, 2023
• Map My Ancestors

Download the app- FamilySearch Family Tree on App Store or Google Play

Sign into the app using your FamilySearch username and password. 

First tab option- Tree 

    Can show in Pedigree or Fan Chart- use the little toggle to go between them

    Change change the number of generations shown on the fan chart (under the name Pedigree in the top center position)

    Filter options for either view by clicking on the option shown (slide to right or left to see more)

        Default- basic colors

        Birth Country

        Sources- darker the color, the more sources attached to that person

        Stories- darker the color, the more stories attached to that person (text based stories only)

        Photos - darker the color, the more photos attached to that person

        Research Helps- persons with record hints to attached, duplicates needing fixed, etc.

        Ordinances- white means all are complete- other colors indicate needed, in progress, etc. 

    Clicking on any of the people will take one to their person page.  More information on this below...

Second tab option- Tasks

    Click on the little "i" button for information on how to use the tasks tab. 

    Pull down to see the option to change to All- Hints- or Temple

Third tab options - Temple

    Takes you to your temple reservation list. 

    Click on "i" button on the left hand side for information about the legend of colors, reservation policy and other information about your temple ordinances. 

    Toggle slides on the right hand side to be able to search for a person on your list.

    Three dots shows your Saved Family Name Cards and My Temple

    Slide right or left to see the different sections

        My Reservations- those saved for only one to complete

        Shared with the temple- those you have shared with the temple for others to assist in completing

        Family Groups- those you have shared within an assigned group of persons (family, friends or ward members- whatever you have selected)

        Completed- a list of those ordinances completed in the last two years 

Fourth Tab- Recents

    A list of the last 50 people you have viewed on FamilySearch

Fifth Tab- More

    Options include:

        Search Historical Records (search by person, location or collection)

        Find a Person (on FamilySearch Family Tree)

        Relatives Around Me (allows for scanning to match cousins within 100 feet)

        Map My Ancestors (shows what family events happened near your present location)

        Improve Place-Names (standardization of places submitted in Family Tree)

        Contacts (those you have added)

        Family Groups (those you have created or a member in)

        My Contributions (shows the number of sources, memories and people you have added to the tree)

        Family History Activities (same ones available on Activities tab on the computer)

        Messages (link to those available on Family Tree)

        Settings (for app, account, profile and subscriptions)

        Help (several options listed)

        Memories (goes to Memories page)

        Other Apps (shows other apps available from the church)

        Sign Out (not recommended unless you know your username and password to sign by in)

Person Page Options- same options as on the computer, just displayed differently (swap left or right to see options not showing.

    Tabs include:

        Details- listing of personal vital information

        Spouses- listing of spouse and children

        Parents- listing of parents and siblings

        Sources- shows all attached sources

        Memories- shows all attached memories 

        Ordinances- shows Temple Ordinances

For all tabs, except Ordinances, there is a "+" sign for adding in new information

For all tabs, except Ordinances, clicking on the information will open up an edit option page. 

Changes made on the app will be reflected in the online FamilySearch Tree- use the same caution when making changes as you would when working on the computer.  Your name is associated with all changes made.

* Descendants with Task allows one to review and attach Record Hints FamilySearch is presenting as probable record matches for this person and for three, four or five generations (you choose with the drop down options).

March Newsletter

From an official communication in January 2023:  "To better align the identify of family history centers with FamilySearch.org, the Church's free online family history resource, all centers are being renamed 'FamilySearch Centers'...FamilySearch centers and the FamilySearch.org website provide helpful guidance to individuals researching their ancestors... FamilySearch centers are a resource available to anyone in the community, regardless of Church membership status."

Although our name has changed, our focus has not!  We are here to assist everyone in whatever family history related activity they are wishing to pursue.    

• Helping with the traditional research- finding names, dates and places of ancestors. Help is available via classes or individually by just coming into the center for assistance by our consultants.  We have several consultants on staff at all times.  

• Helping to add Memories into FamilySearch- photos, documents, stories and audios.  Dates and places provide the facts of their lives. The Memories provide the fascination of their lives... helping our ancestors come to "life."

• Helping to digitize those family heirlooms- photos, slides, negatives, audio cassettes, audio reel to reels, 8 mm movie reels, super 8 mm movie reels, VHS tapes, VHS-C tapes, 8 mm movie casssettes, Mini-DV tapes, newspaper clippings, and documents.  About anything you might have laying around your home (or hidden in boxes in the attic or basement.)

• Learning more about your family through fun activities for all ages on the computer or on our big interactive Discovery Screens. 

• Recording of your own personal story one question at a time in our recording studio with audio and video options. Recording your own story is part of family history.  

• Interviewing your family members in the recording studio to capture their stories in audio and video.   Have those family members who haven't written their own histories- recording them is a super fun and quick option. 

• Working on community projects to preserve the history of our communities.   Current options include obituaries, World War II newspaper clippings, death records and photo identification.  

• Even teaching basic computer skills necessary for online family history work. A six-week class taught several times a year. 

• Offering a variety of classes on many different topics and skill levels. Classes include options for learning more about websites, phone apps, basic research skills, using google and other tech for family history, plus many many more.  We have new instructors joining our ranks- so watch for new class offerings in the near future. 

• Someplace to share your enthusiasm after a new found family history treasure or brick wall break through.   Not everyone will fully understand that enthusiasm, but we do!  Come share your fun finds with us. 

And remember, if you aren't enjoying family history, you are not doing it right!  Family history is so multi-faceted, everyone should be able to find a part that is of interest to them personally.  Come to the center and let us help you find your interest!

Center News

• Again we wish to thank everyone for attending our Expo!  We are excited to announce, we will be doing it again next year.  We have reserved the Mini-Cassia CSI for February 2024.  More information will be available as the time gets closer. 
• Sunday Classes.  We will be having classes on most Sundays taught by Cameron- check the calendar for options and details.   
• We are happy to announce we will be offering assistance in Spanish on the 4th Sundays of each month.  For March 26, 2 pm Introducción al Investigación Mexicana by Cameron and 3 pm-6 pm  Asistencia espanola by Cameron. 
• Google Series continues with Google Docs on March 7th at 10:30 am by Shaura
• FamilySearch 101 part 1 and 2 on March 9th and 16th at 10:30 am by Anna Marie
• New Class -Using Puzzilla on March 28 at 10:30 by Lewis.   Check out the link below for more information about what you can do with Puzzilla.  
• Ward Consultant Training this month is about using the FamilyTree app.   This class is designed for Stake and Ward Consultants, but everyone is welcome to attend. Offered twice a month- March 6 at 2 pm and March 30 at 7 pm.   It is best to have the FamilyTree app downloaded and signed into prior the class. 
• Youth oriented classes offered on Fridays, March 10, March 17th and March 31st (closed on March 24th)

February Consultant Training- Topic Activities

This month training in all about the Activities available on FamilySearch. 

FamilySearch Activities are simple and fun. Activities are a great way to help youth and children understand more about their heritage and family. Most require no research time or skills.

FamilySearch family history activities are a great introduction to temple and family history work. You can use them in your family home evenings or other family activities.  Temple and family history consultants can use them during personalized family history experiences. Use activities for Sunday lessons and ward or youth activities. 

Some of these activities are also available on the big Discovery Screens at our center.

Sign into FamilySearch, click on Activities. If you click on any of the specific listings, you will only see those.  If you wish to see all activities, click on All Activities from the Activities tab.  Not everyone will have all of the same options, because it's based on ancestors in your Family Tree.  

All Activities:

Where Am I From?- 

    Generations- Shows where your ancestors came from in the last 8 generations- can use filter at the bottom to change number of generations showing

     My Family Lines- choose a family line to follow

    My Heritage- shows the countries of your ancestors. Click on any of the countries to learn more abou that countries' foods, recipes, families, social, fun facts, traditions and see which ancestors came from there. 

    Timeline- Shows where ancestors were born based on timeline- use filter to adjust the time frame

Surname Origins- enter any surname and see what the origins of the name are and where persons with this surname originate.

All About Me- Gives information about your name, your heritage and several options of what was happening in the year you were born

Compare-a-Face- take a personal photo and see how you compare to your ancestors.  Options to click on different persons along the top.  Clicking on the "Learn More" option takes you to FamilySearch to learn more about that ancestor. 

Famous Relatives- shows pertinent persons to whom you are related- you can click on the person to see the family connection

Record My Story- an option to record your personal history one question at a time.  There are eight different sections, each with a number of possible questions to answer.   (These are available in your recording studio as well- with the option to save the video clip as well!) Options to do "New Stories" or to see "My Stories."  Once you have recorded a story, a check mark will show on that question so you can keep track of which ones you have already done.

Picture My Heritage- allows you to take a personal photo and add it into ancestral costumes. Options for males, females or groups. 

In-Home Activities

    Three different sections- About Me, My Family and The Temple

    This section is geared to 10-11 years (especially The Temple) to help them be prepared to attend the temple.  These activities are designed to be done as family- and most of them don't require a computer. As the activities are completed, you can check them off by clicking "I Did It" to keep track of what you have already done.

Ancestor Challenge- gets you 10 multiple choice questions to identify ancestors by their photos.

*WWI Service Records- Shows which of your ancestors served in WWI.  

*My Ancestor's Temple- Shows where each of your ancestors' original temple work was done if done personally.

*Missionaries- Shows which of your ancestors served missions- showing missionary journals, mission call letters, and mission stories.

*Nauvoo- Shows which or your ancestors lived in Nauvoo at the time of Joseph Smith

Historical Records- List of Record Hints available on your ancestors

*My Pioneer Ancestors- Shows which of your ancestors crossed the plains with the early pioneers

*Women of Faith- Shows which female ancestors were mentioned in important record in early church history.

*WWII Service Records- Shows which of your ancestors served in WWII

*Joseph Smith Papers- Shows which of your ancestors are listed in the Joseph Smith Papers

*WWI Draft Card- Shows which of your ancestors filled out Draft Registration Cards.

*Each of these activities have multi-leveled options. Not all categories have all of these options. 

    Most contain more than one ancestor- use the arrows keys to move right or left

    From the initial person card, you can go to FamilySearch to see more about the person, view photos or stories, and click on whatever is in "blue" for links to other websites with more information about the event in question. 

    Scroll down to see the time line and where this person fits in relation to church historical events

     Several have options under "read more" to learn more about this section in general.

Come One!  Come All!  Join in the Fun!
Burley Family History Center Expo

 

We are having our expo on February 11, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Burley West Stake Center.  The theme is Turning Hearts.  Check out the website for more information about the presenters and the classes.   Also note- there will be a free pulled pork lunch provided for those who RSVP before February 1st.   Click here for the website and to RSVP. 

Presenters include President Harris from the Twin Falls Temple, Joe Price from the Recording Linking Lab, Richard Millar creator of Goldie May and several of our own local personalities.  Topics for everyone and all skill levels. And take a walk down memory lane as you move from class to class enjoying historic photos on the walls of our communities or participate in a QR scavenger hunt. 

Feel free to bring your own snacks or lunch if you like and enjoy some live music in the gym.  Also in the gym will be booths about community projects, digitizing at the center, Burley Temple information and video, missionaries, and a question and answer booth. Be sure to stop by the center booth for information about the raffle.  We have some DNA kits, umbrellas and pioneer handcart replicas as prizes.  

Mark your calendars, plan to attend and RSVP for lunch by February 1st.   No RSVP required for the classes, just for the lunch.   We hope to see you all there.   

Center news

• Youth classes ~  We are excited to announce we will be having youth geared classes on Fridays from February - April.  Classes will be held at 10:30 and last about 30-45 minutes. These will be fast paced classes offered for the youth to learn a few of the basics of family history and some fun activities in connection with family history.    Check out the calendar for the specific topics.  

• Youth Summer Program ~   We will be having a youth summer program again this summer with a few adjustments.    This will be on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons June 14- August 10 from 2- 5 pm.  There will be youth consultants on staff during these times, but we will also be providing additional classes and projects each day of the summer program.  Youth are welcome to come to any or all of the classes and assist with whatever projects they wish throughout the summer. They are also welcome to just come and work on their own family history or get help in furthering their own family lines.   If any youth are wishing to be consultants during the summer, please contact Tammy for more info 208-431-4504.  

• Ever have a hard time remembering all of those passwords- we have the class for you!  Jeff will be teaching a Password Management Class on Feb. 2nd at 10:30 a.m.

• You might have a formal written will… but do you have a digital will? What is it and why would I need it?   Sharon will be teaching a class all about this on Feb. 22 at 1:00 p.m.

• Our Google series by Shaura continues this month-  Google Drive on Feb. 7 at 10:30 a.m. and Google Slides on Feb. 21 at 10:30 a.m.

• We have several ongoing classes.   
• Basic computers is presented several times a year- a six week class all about the basics of using computers taught by Heather.  
• FamilySearch 101 the basics of FamilySearch is taught in a two part class each month by Anna Marie.  
• Bring your Family History Questions - Sue and Nina offer a class each month designed to assist with any family history questions you might have- bring a question or come learn from others' questions.  
• Becoming a Tech Savvy Genealogist - classes each month by Sharon.

• We will be closed from February 17 to February 20 for President's Day Weekend.

January 2023 - Consultant Training - Memories App

Using the Memories App

FamilySearch has three apps- FamilySearch Family Tree, FamilySearch Memories, and Get Involved.   

    FamilySearch Family Tree App allows you to view and edit information about your relatives, including viewing and editing memories for a specific relative.  Focuses on one relative at a time. Must be on the person to add in photos, stories, documents or audio.   Also allows for Ordinances Ready and printing of temple cards.   Search and attach records as sources, complete tasks, search for duplicates, and view your relationship to an individual.

     Get Involved App is the app used for indexing options.   A class will be provided on this at the upcoming expo by Sue Egbert.  Watch for other classes available at the center in the near future as well. 

    FamilySearch Memories App helps you collect, preserve and share your family memories- photos and audio recordings.  It focuses on the memory items and puts everything into your gallery.   You cannot see additional information about your relatives, only their memories.   You can also organize your memories into album, archive or unarchive memory items or access the recently deleted items. Great for adding memories to a variety of people as everything goes in your gallery.

Personally I find it easier to do the photo tagging and editing of description/title on the computer.  But using the Memories app is a great way to upload a variety of photos, documents or add audios very easily. 

1- Download the app(s) from the App Store or Google Play

2- Sign in with your FamilySearch account- note it must be a FamilySearch account (not a Church of Jesus Christ Account)

Note: These instructions apply to the iOS or apple phone.  For Android information check the "More Options" below.

3 - The app will open to whatever screen you closed on.  i.e. My Memories, Albums, or Find.

    My Memories is the gallery (filterable by the icons at the top- Photos, Stories, Documents or Audio

    Albums- listing of the albums you have previously created.  The + Folder in the lower right hand corner allows you to create a new album.

    Find- allows you to search through all of FamilySearch Memories (not just those you have uploaded)

    The "More" Options include Archived and Recently Deleted.  Also information about your account, help, link to FamilyTree App, Other Apps and option to sign out. 

4- To upload a memory- click on the "+" in the lower right hand corner. 

    Then select what you want to upload.

        Add Document- adds from a Photo, Camera Roll or My Files

        Write Story- Requires one to type in the story

        Add Audio- adds from Record Audio (actually speaking into the photo or recording from a tape player, etc.) or My Files

        Add Photo- adds from a Photo, Camera Roll or My Files

5-  When clicking on "Photo" this turns the phone's camera on and you take a photo of the document or the picture.

    Options then include "Retake" (lets you retake the photo)  or "Use Photo" (goes to next screen to "Edit" or "Save")  Edit is done with the cropping opinion in lower left hand side, or rotation option in the lower right hand side.  Then click "save"    This saves the photo to your Gallery.   

6- When clicking on Camera Roll, you are given the option of selecting one or more photos (previously taken with your iPhone). Click on the photos you wish to upload and then click "add" in the upper right hand corner.

7- When clicking on My Files, you are taken to the files on your iPhone.  Click on the files you wish to upload and click "open" in upper right hand side. Then edit or save the photo (as described above)  and click "save" to upload. 

8-When clicking on Write Story- You first add in the "title". Then tap in the Enter Story Content to move the cursor to that section.  Type in your story.  Click on the Camera Icon is you wish to add photos to your story.  Click "save" in the upper right hand corner when finished. 

9- When clicking on Add Audio and selecting Record Audio, the microphone on your phone is turned on.  There is an option to select a thought question to answer, or just click on "Begin Recording" to record your own audio.  Audios are limited to 5 minutes each.    Click on the microphone in the Start circle to start the recording. The timer will count down letting you know how much time is remaining.    Click "Done" when finished with that audio.  Then add in a Title, click "ok.  The Audio file is uploaded. 

Note- if you aren't on a wi-fi connection or out of service, everything will be saved to your photo and upon getting back into wi-fi service the memories 

6- To tag the memory- click on the memory to open it. 

    Use the little icons in the lower right hand side.

        Tag- allows for tagging with a topic or place (tap to type in your choice and tap save) 

        Conversation Bubble - make a short comment about the memory (tap to type in your comment, then tap save)

        Person Icon- tag the memory to a specific person(s) on FamilySearch Family Tree. (scroll through the list, use the alphabet filter, or type the person's name into the top option.   To select one, tap on the bubble to the right of the person's name(s).  Then tap on Done.

        Details-  Title, Description, Event Details, Visibility, Image Type

        Rotate Right- rotates to the right 90 degrees at a time

       Add to Album- given a list of your albums- tap on the album you wish to move the photo.  Note- the photo doesn't disappear from the overall gallery, but a link is added to the album. The memory can be seen from either the gallery or within the album

        Move to Archive- this moves the memory from the active gallery to an archive.  It doesn't delete it from FamilySearch, just moves it from the active gallery.

        Delete- This deletes the memory completely from FamilySearch.  Do not delete if you wish the item to continue to be shown on anyone's memories in FamilySearch. 

        Report Abuse- report abuse of the rules or permissions to FamilySearch for review. 

Just give it a try-  you can delete anything that you don't want to have remain on FamilySearch.   Get comfortable with the app before showing it to others, or using it at a family gathering or reunion.
