March 2026 Newsletter

🌷 Welcome to March at the Burley FamilySearch Center!

March invites us to look both forward and back—toward springtime renewal and toward the foundations of our families and our nation. At the Burley FamilySearch Center, we love helping individuals and families discover the stories that shaped who they are today.

Whether you are new to family history or continuing long-time research, our friendly volunteers are here to help you make meaningful discoveries.

RootsTech 2026 will take place March 5–7, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and online at RootsTech.org. Select content will be available in multiple languages.

RootsTech is hosted annually by FamilySearch, an international genealogy organization and website sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The annual 3-day genealogy conference includes a variety of family history-themed activities, including:
  • Hundreds of in-person and online classes for beginners and experts
  • A virtual Expo Hall for browsing and learning about new products
  • Daily forums on the latest breakthroughs in family history innovation

How to Register

To register for RootsTech 2026, visit the registration page on RootsTech.org. There are two registration options — one for attending online and one for attending in person in Salt Lake City, Utah. 

Free Online Event
Virtual participants will be able to watch RootsTech from anywhere in the world at no cost. Registration is encouraged and ensures full access to all livestreamed and online RootsTech events once the conference starts. Register here.

In-Person Event
Those who plan to attend RootsTech in person can register online or in person at the event. Pricing is $79 for one day and $129 for a three-day pass. Family Discovery Day is Saturday, March 7, and is free for the whole family.

⭐ Three Little-Known Facts About the Declaration

  1. July 4 wasn’t the vote for independence.
    Congress actually voted to declare independence on July 2, 1776. July 4 is when the final wording was approved.

  2. Most people didn’t sign it on July 4.
    While July 4 is famous, most delegates signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776.

  3. It was meant to be read aloud.
    The Declaration was publicly read in town squares so ordinary citizens could hear it—making it one of the earliest examples of a document written for the people, not just leaders.


🌼 Family History Thought for March

Understanding our national history helps us better understand our family stories. Many of our ancestors lived through the Revolutionary era—or were shaped by the freedoms that followed. Their choices, sacrifices, and hopes live on through us.


📜 The Declaration of Independence

In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,—That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.—Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.
