June Newsletter

Our Summer Program isn't just for youth this year...

All ages are welcome to come see how you can make a difference!

Wednesdays and Thursdays from June 14 to August 10, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Our youth consultants have been doing basic training to be able to assist others whom might come into the center this summer, be it youth or adults. The learning will continue throughout the summer and everyone is invited to come and learn with them.   Lessons will be held on each Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Topics will include: using FamilySearch, memories, timelines, attaching record hints and sources, using Goldie May; also learning new websites like Puzzilla, Tree Sweeper, BYU Technology Lab, Record Linking Lab, and more!  Something for everyone!

Additionally, at 3:00 p.m. each Wednesday and Thursday, we will be introducing and working on some community projects.  We are continuing to expand our options to include multiple databases and interests including: censuses, cemeteries, obituaries, naturalization papers, WWII memorials, photo attachments, and other databases in FamilySearch specific to our Mini-Cassia area.  Many of these community projects can be worked on from home following the basic training.   Come check out our projects and help us document all those who have lived in our communities.

Check out the calendar for June, July and August to see which lessons and community projects are being highlighted on specific days.

Groups are welcome to make appointments during these afternoons as well- come and be a part of our learning for the day, or schedule at 4:00 for other options.

What will you do to make a difference this summer?  In your life and in the lives of others, including those beyond the veil.  The blessings of family history work are abundant.  Check these out for more details.

May Consultant Training- Ward Plans and Organization

Ward Plans are the basis for all Temple and Family History Work in our ward.  Here's a short 3 minute video from RootsTech which explains Ward Plans.

Elder Renlund's 2019 RootsTech instruction clarifying of leadership responsibilities in the ward.

Link to his comments complete with slides.

From the Handbook of Instructions, see Section 25.2.6 for more details.

"Each ward should have a simple temple and family history plan. This plan helps ward members, including children and youth, participate in family history work and prepare to worship in the temple as often as their circumstances allow.
"The elders quorum and Relief Society presidents help the ward council develop the plan. The ward temple and family history leader also helps. In developing the plan, they:

  • Consider available needs and resources.
  • Identify actions to take during the year.
  • Determine how to implement the plan and make assignments accordingly.
"Examples of what the plan might include are listed below:
  • Help members build their family trees on FamilySearch.org or with the FamilySearch Tree app (see 25.4.2).
  • Involve new and returning members, youth, and children in family history work.
  • Help specific members prepare to receive temple ordinances.
"The bishop reviews and approves the plan. Members of the ward council take the lead in implementing it. They report on progress in ward council meetings. They also update the plan as needed."

Other practical tips.
  • Ideally the Ward Council should develop the plan.  But the committee might do well to make suggestions of possible areas of focus.
  • Make sure the whole ward knows the plan, so everyone can participate in it.
  • It would be helpful if there are specific tasks for the Ward consultants to accomplish.
  • Suggested to have meaningful measurable goals.  Not just generalities or abstract ideas.   More concrete and measurable to see the progress.
  • Think outside the normal genealogical box.   Not just research based or temple attendance.   What else strengthens family relationships and our eternal covenants and connections?
  • Could include goals for specific age groups or organizational goals.
  • Could include specific ward activities, sponsored and supported by organizations, to get the whole ward involved.   Some wards are doing family history linger longers.  Some are using the 5th Sunday lessons for family history ideas.  Some are doing ward activities.  Some have family history talks presented on a regular basic in their sacrament meetings.
  • Plans can be changed as needed throughout the year or at least have an annual review.

Want to Serve?

How about a Virtual Service Mission?

Here's the information about this opportunity which was recently shared with the Bishoprics and Stake Presidencies in our area (the option is available for anyone living anywhere):

We are excited to announce: we have found a way for people in our area to serve a local family history mission.  It’s a special mission, the virtual NAO- FamilySearch Records - BYU Senior Service mission. The purpose of this mission is “Gathering of Israel by growing The Tree in FamilySearch.” What’s great about this mission is it can be completely done anywhere by anyone with a computer and internet access. This is basically the next step to indexing.  They are attaching records in the Family Tree.

Tammy has spoken with Sister Lisa Gardner who is the administrative lead for this mission.  She has also talked with Joe Price, the director of the BYU Record Linking Lab.  We are all in agreement this is a great opportunity for members of our community to serve a family history mission and assist with the Gathering of Israel!  A win-win for all.  This is officially a call from the Missionary Department, and as such, these persons cannot be assigned or called to work at the FamilySearch Center as part of their mission.  However, they are welcome to come to the center as patrons for help and assistance as needed.

Several consultants, assistants, and the Young Church Service Missionaries at the center are already working on the easy projects in the Record Linking Lab.  They love it and are able to work successfully on their own in only a matter of a few minutes training.  These projects are not restricted to only the Senior missionaries; anyone can volunteer to assist in this great work.  We will be using it for our Youth Consultants this summer.  We hope to eventually open one evening a week for others in the community to volunteer and work on these projects without the commitment of a mission.

For the mission, the time requirement is 12 hours per week, with an initial minimum commitment of 12 months.  There is a weekly devotional for all missionaries to attend, via Zoom, on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. MST/MDT.  If not able to attend “live,” they can watch the recording at their convenience.  The sign up is all done online with the assistance of Sister Lisa Gardner.  Below are excerpts from the email she sends to all potential applicants.  If anyone wants to try it out before committing to a mission, they are welcome to come to the center and work as a volunteer on this project first.

We are really excited about the option for people in our community.  Some at the center have already expressed interest in serving a mission.  If there are people in your stewardships who could benefit from the blessings of family history in their lives, please consider offering them this opportunity.  And, watch for the emails coming about potential missionaries from among current consultants and patrons wishing to serve as we begin advertising to the whole community about this option through our newsletter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.

Great blessings await us all as we move forward in the work of gathering Israel!

Any questions, please don’t hesitate to call, Tammy 208-431-4504, or come to one of the classes this month about serving a mission or working as a volunteer on these projects.  We will answer whatever questions you might have and also provide hands on demonstrations of some of the projects that can be included in this mission.  Classes will be May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. and May 7th at 4:00 p.m.

Excerpt from Sister Gardner's introductory email:

“We are a virtual senior service mission affiliated with FamilySearch and BYU Record Linking Lab, which means you serve from home.  All training is done virtually and we do not travel to BYU or meet in person.  Initially, you may choose to serve for 12 or 18 months.  After the initial term, you may choose to extend your mission by 6 months, 12 months, or 18 additional months, as many times as you would like.  I have extended my mission because I really love what we do!"

“The basic requirements are that you are willing to commit to working on our mission work for 12 hours a week and attend a weekly devotional.  Our mission is to assist in the Gathering of Israel by growing The Tree in FamilySearch.  We work on a broad number of projects, including the volunteer projects listed in BYU Record Linking Lab's volunteer tab."

“To start the process, you will need to apply online on the Church's website for a mission.  I can help you do that.  I have the mission number that you need to use to ensure you get into the correct mission. There are many senior service missions, with different tasks.  Once the online application is complete, it will be sent electronically to your bishop.  You will need to have an interview with your bishop and then with your stake president.  Once these interviews are complete, the stake president hits a button and the information is sent to Salt Lake and a mission call is issued.  This process can take 2-3 months.  Your stake president becomes your mission president.  I become your administrative mission lead.”

If interested in more information or signing up for a mission, contact Sister Gardner (NAO BYU-Lead) at barbara.gardner@familysearch.org

Center Happenings --- Did you know?

1 - Group Reservations:  Groups are welcome to schedule appointments at the center.  Groups of any size, including families, church groups, community groups, etc.  Appointments are available during regular center hours, weekends, or evenings.  For more information about all the options and who to contact, check out the Group Visits tab.

2 - Summer Program:  We are sponsoring a Summer Youth Program again this summer.  It will be held on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., June 14th - August 10th.  We will have trained youth consultants here to work with other youth and adults.  We will be having a lesson at 2:00 p.m. on those days, an introduction to community projects at 3:00 p.m. each day, and then time to work on either personal family history or help with the projects.  We encourage youth and adults to come and learn more about their own family and how to assist in growing and enhancing the Family Tree for the world through our projects.  No prior family history experience is necessary to work on the projects - come have fun with the youth!  Watch for the class listings and community projects shown on the calendar starting on June 14th.

3 - Book Offering:  Kathleen Hedberg wrote a book called, "It Couldn't Happen Here" about the heavy flooding in 1984 in Cassia County.  She has some additional copies of the books available.  She would be willing to give one to anyone who was involved directly with the service project undertaken by the community or the descendants of those involved with the project.  We have a few copies at the center; just drop by and pick up one.  If you or your ancestors weren't directly involved and you wish to purchase a book, she is offering them at a discount price.  You can contact her directly at 208-878-2406.

4 - Night Classes - Family History Club:  There is a group starting on Thursday evenings by Jonathan and Jenny Shurtliff called the Family History Club.  They will start meeting on June 1st from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  Each week they will have an instructor present a lesson, or occasionally have a "Bring your own questions" and the group will work through the questions together.  Feel free to join the club and attend each week to learn from one another.  Or, watch for the topics and attend those classes of interest to you.

Family History Has Changed!

Family history isn't just the names, dates, and places all written out on stacks and stacks of papers.  It's about changing hearts.  "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers..." Malachi 4:6

Think about the following activities and see if they apply to family history or turning of the hearts.

  • Do you enjoy looking at old photos and seeing how things have changed?  Check out our Community Projects Tab for options of viewing some old photos from our communities.

  • Do you enjoy taking photos and preserving current family events for future generations?
  • Can you take a photo with your phone?  If so, you can preserve photos to FamilySearch with that same click.  Note: FamilySearch is not to be a storage place for all your photos of living people, but rather a place to share photos of deceased ancestors.  Uploading photos to FamilySearch

  • Do you enjoy reading or listening to stories about your grandparents?  Did you know there is a website called "All the Stories" that will populate a listing of all the stories on your family tree in FamilySearch?

  • Or, do you enjoy sharing your own stories with your children or grandkids?  Are those stories recorded for future generations?  Consider recording them with Memories app or something like using Marco Polo.  (Note: this video was done two years ago and some of the screen shots are different, but the basics are covered.)

  • Ever have that fun evening gathered around the tv or computer and enjoy viewing old family movies?  Or, are those movies just sitting in the attic or the basement on the old reels or tapes that you can't even view because you don't have the proper equipment to view them?  We can help you with that at the center - we can digitize about any media you might have.  Check out all of our options.

  • Maybe you like to scrapbook current family events or make tribute pages to your ancestors?  You can digitized those old scrapbooks and upload them to FamilySearch so more people can enjoy the pages and learn about their ancestors.

  • Does your family have a Facebook page honoring a family line or an important individual in your family?  How about sharing those memories on FamilySearch?  Or, honoring one grandparent a month with all of the cousins sharing their favorite memories online?  Three ways to honor our ancestors

  • Do you, following Thanksgiving dinner, have the older generation share with the family the happenings of their lives?  Or, share the greatest things they have learned while on this earth?  Have you thought about recording those - using the Memories app with only a few clicks, they can automatically be put on FamilySearch.

  • What adorns the walls of your home?  Photos of ancestors, visual family tree charts, quotes about family, photos of family or of the temple?

  • Ever made a recipe from an ancestor's homeland?  Those are easily available on FamilySearch in the activities tab.  Or, by visiting the Family History Center and playing on the big Discovery screens.  You can email them directly to yourself from there.

  • Do you have Christmas traditions?  Reading the Christmas story from the Bible?  Maybe your family had traditions they started years ago.  Maybe it includes acting out the nativity by the younger children.  What were the Christmas traditions of your ancestors?  Christmas Traditions Around the World

  • How about those Christmas newsletters in sharing special events with other family and friends?   (Even if it takes on a more technical form of blogging or electronic family newsletter.)

  • What other traditions might your family have in relation to holidays or observances?  Back to school blessings?  Thankful statements before Thanksgiving dinner?  Daily scripture reading or family prayer?  Family temple attendance?  20 Family Traditions Ideas
  • What would it mean to you to hear the voice of your loved one?  Do you have audio cassettes hidden somewhere among those boxes you got from grandma?  We can help digitize those at the center as well.  They can then be shared on FamilySearch.

  • And don't forget - have you recorded your own life story?  How about your testimony?  Those things can be recorded on your FamilySearch account and will not be made public until your death.  And, we have a state of the art recording studio at the Center where you can record those stories 4 minutes at a time, complete with video options.  Record My Story Activity

This is not an all inclusive listing of family history activities, but just a sample of things you can be doing.  And, probably things you are already doing and didn't realize they were really family history related.  Maybe now you might do some of these activities with a little more purpose.

In case you didn't notice, there's a lot of things we can assist you with at the FamilySearch Center.  And, FamilySearch is a great place to share these treasures so multiple family members and many generations can enjoy them.  Come see how we can assist in your family history endeavors!

March Newsletter

From an official communication in January 2023:  "To better align the identify of family history centers with FamilySearch.org, the Church's free online family history resource, all centers are being renamed 'FamilySearch Centers'...FamilySearch centers and the FamilySearch.org website provide helpful guidance to individuals researching their ancestors... FamilySearch centers are a resource available to anyone in the community, regardless of Church membership status."

Although our name has changed, our focus has not!  We are here to assist everyone in whatever family history related activity they are wishing to pursue.

  • Helping with the traditional research- finding names, dates and places of ancestors. Help is available via classes or individually by just coming into the center for assistance by our consultants.  We have several consultants on staff at all times.
  • Helping to add Memories into FamilySearch- photos, documents, stories and audios.  Dates and places provide the facts of their lives. The Memories provide the fascination of their lives... helping our ancestors come to "life."
  • Helping to digitize those family heirlooms- photos, slides, negatives, audio cassettes, audio reel to reels, 8 mm movie reels, super 8 mm movie reels, VHS tapes, VHS-C tapes, 8 mm movie casssettes, Mini-DV tapes, newspaper clippings, and documents.  About anything you might have laying around your home (or hidden in boxes in the attic or basement.)
  • Learning more about your family through fun activities for all ages on the computer or on our big interactive Discovery Screens.
  • Recording of your own personal story one question at a time in our recording studio with audio and video options. Recording your own story is part of family history.
  • Interviewing your family members in the recording studio to capture their stories in audio and video.   Have those family members who haven't written their own histories- recording them is a super fun and quick option.
  • Working on community projects to preserve the history of our communities.   Current options include obituaries, World War II newspaper clippings, death records and photo identification.
  • Even teaching basic computer skills necessary for online family history work. A six-week class taught several times a year.
  • Offering a variety of classes on many different topics and skill levels. Classes include options for learning more about websites, phone apps, basic research skills, using google and other tech for family history, plus many many more.  We have new instructors joining our ranks- so watch for new class offerings in the near future.
  • Someplace to share your enthusiasm after a new found family history treasure or brick wall break through.   Not everyone will fully understand that enthusiasm, but we do!  Come share your fun finds with us.
And remember, if you aren't enjoying family history, you are not doing it right!  Family history is so multi-faceted, everyone should be able to find a part that is of interest to them personally.  Come to the center and let us help you find your interest!
