November 2026 Newsletter

One if by land, two if by sea.  A small act perhaps, but with enormous consequences.  A small spark, a small beacon of light that prepared Patriot forces for the opening battle of the American Revolutionary War.  Can you name the three men stationed at the Old North Church who served our country in this act?  Not all who serve are made famous.

Perhaps I got a bit personal in my newsletter last month.  Not every patriot is a decorated veteran or written about in history books.  However, every role is significant no matter how small.  These thoughts are inspired by the words of those who sent me their thoughts on "Why I Love America."

It took the hearts and minds of millions to write the history of this great country.  Still today we are inspired by their acts of courage.

What part do we play you might ask.  Today I'm thinking of the farmer who plants the seeds and milks the cows that we might have food and milk (and ice cream, of course) on our tables.  Brave teachers who face classrooms of rambunctious students in an effort to instill knowledge and teach subjects that create a greater civilization.  Truckers that transport goods to every part of our country.  We can't forget moms, dads, grandparents, and other relatives that serve in capacities that help create the people we are becoming.  We must not forget the military, first responders, and those who enforce laws that provide for our peace and safety.  The list is never ending . . . mail carriers, custodians, students, the friendly neighbor across the street, the grocer, our religious leaders, and so very many more.  Perhaps you can think back on your life and remember great women and men who helped shape your life.

Take a moment to thank someone who has served you.  Then pause to think of your own role in society.  All of us are important.  Each has a role to play in the greatness of the whole.  Your story matters!

By the way, Robert Newman and Captain John Pulling, Jr. were the men who climbed the Tower in the Old North Church while Thomas Bernard stood guard outside the church.

In a world that seeks the praise of man, I wish to honor those who quietly go about doing good.  They are motivated by love of God, love of family, love of neighbors.

"Great women and men are always more anxious to serve than to have dominion (President Spencer W. Kimball.)

In the words of President John F. Kennedy: "My fellow citizens . . . ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."  "Finally, . . . with a good conscience, our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."

There are many websites that can help us find ways to serve and unify our communities and our country.  Just ask Google, "How can we as Americans help build a more united country?"

It's been a great year celebrating the semiquincentennial of our country.  We learn from the past in order to improve the future.

Here are some more of your thoughts on "Why I Love America."
